Human trafficking, kidnapping, and mass murder are some of the activities they partake in. They’re all violent paramilitary groups and the player sees how horrible they are, for sure. There were three major crime organizations that Max tangled with – The UFE, Cracha Preto, and the Comando Sombras. The game dehumanizes them, and before you can attempt to empathize, all hostile combatants become bloody ragdolls. If Max encountered someone who didn’t speak English, their conversation would soon go south, in in the next instant, they are shooting at each other and we all know who survives.

By my count, it became clear that Max was singlehandedly eliminating the entire male population of Sao Paulo. Because the game depicts the vast majority of Brazilian men committing violent acts, the violence Max and the player administer towards them is retaliatory, and therefore justified. They’re an endless supply of nameless, faceless, angry- sounding men. While I knew the narrative was going to focus on Max and everyone else was rather expendable, Max Payne 3 consistently portrays people of color in a negative light. Although I managed to complete the game on Normal, I don’t have a great desire to play again on a higher difficulty level, or to play through sections of the game for a high score. I just felt irritated that this feeling of empowerment can be suddenly marred by oversights in game mechanics. Again, I have to say that shoot dodging is visceral, and it is extremely satisfying to obliterate a room of rushing enemies in a couple of well-timed dodges. To its credit, when you have mastered the combat mechanics, Max is as unstoppable in the game as he is in the cutscenes. Sometimes, I did save his life, only to lose control and die yet again. While he’s still in la-la land, he can still be shot back to death. He’s busy regaining his senses, I suspect. When he wins his life back, he abruptly hits the floor, even if he was stationary when shot. During Last Stand, he makes the video game equivalent of a final slow motion jump-aim-fire of revenge, but because this is a game, he can survive and you can keep playing. A successful Last Stand results in the player regaining control of Max while he’s on the ground, except you’re unable to get him to move. If you were to survive, things can potentially get worse before they get better. That’s way too many exceptions that all result in the player losing due to events outside of their control. If your cross hair is between the eyes of your killer, and Max is unable to physically turn his arm or body around to properly face him.If your gun runs out of ammo and you can do nothing but watch Max die in slow motion. If he’s “standing in plain sight” but your view of him is obscured because he’s wearing a black jacket and standing next to a dark building. If he conveniently hides in cover and you literally can’t shoot him.Unfortunately, there are a lot of exceptions that prevented me from doing so: When it does happen, the game slows down and forces you to aim specifically for the enemy who got you. It’s a cool feature on paper, but in practice, I was very frustrated with it. Ideally, I get a chance to shoot the guy who killed me, which awards another chance at living. If Max has a restorative on him when he is fatally shot, he enters Last Stand mode. To make matters worse, the one lifeline that the game threw at me backfired a lot. I said earlier that failure often occurs too fast because the player is unable to recognize the severity of the danger they’re in to correct themselves. Even so, the feeling of success in a gunfight and Max’s characterization were two exceptional factors to the experience. I got tired of it halfway through, partially because I was constantly at odds with the game mechanics. It’s a summer gaming blockbuster with a lot of gunfire, explosions and machismo.
